This is a grassroots, collaborative, community-led initiative which seeks to empower the people of Portsmouth and the Portsmouth Harbour area to build upon the initiative and continue to uncover and make visible Black history in Portsmouth.

To ensure that Portsmouth’s Black history is embedded as an integral part of our local history, and British history more broadly, understanding and challenging racial injustice today by engaging with the history and legacies of slavery, colonialism and migration.

To move away from limiting Black history to celebrating the “contribution” of Black men and women to Britain and, consolidate and enrich the knowledge of Portsmouth’s Black history.

To uncover the richness and diversity of Black lives in Portsmouth and the Portsmouth Harbour area as an intrinsic part of our social fabric.
